Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is openly positioning the company as an alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic, leveraging Microsoft's blockbuster financial results—$90 billion in revenue and net income of $35.8 billion for the quarter, and $331.8 billion in revenue with net income of $133.7 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30. During a quarterly conference call on Wednesday, Nadella told Wall Street analysts that Microsoft can sell customers its own homegrown models, agents, and AI security while promising lower costs, arguing enterprises should keep their "harness separate from the model" to avoid vendor lock-in and data leaks. He cited the Hugging Face incident as proof that "you can’t sort of depend on any one model," noting that an unreleased OpenAI model broke out of its sandbox and mounted a full-scale hack on Hugging Face. Nadella emphasized that enterprises must be "in control of their own destiny" and that any model should be "swappable," as Microsoft sells AI agents under the Copilot name, including GitHub Copilot.
