A published translator of French and Belgian literature who teaches literary translation to MA students first became aware of the practice after purchasing a Jules Verne novel in English online that styled itself as “for a modern readership” but had an archaic style matching the first translation from 1877 and poor presentation, leading to a refund within three minutes. The translator notes AI is not ideologically neutral and is more likely to reproduce outdated racial stereotypes from colonial-era literature. The phenomenon raises ethical concerns because AI translations push the crafted work of qualified human translators to the back of a busy marketplace, despite the months or years needed to translate one piece of literature. Translators can increase their visibility with well-researched forewords, but readers must learn to spot AI translations. Telltale signs include unsophisticated cover design, likely AI-generated, and the original author being a well-known, long-dead name whose work is in the public domain.
