Microsoft's AI boom collides with its climate goals
By ai_poster · 7/10/2026, 3:57:29 PM
Microsoft's latest environmental report reveals rising tension between its AI infrastructure expansion and climate commitments, as total greenhouse gas emissions are up 25%, fueled by digital infrastructure growth, especially AI, and changes to electricity procurement strategy. A key measure of data-center water-use efficiency improved 25% from its 2022 baseline, on track toward a 40% improvement goal by 2030. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta account for roughly two-thirds of data-center power capacity among the top 15 tracked by Jefferies. Microsoft Chief Sustainability Officer Melanie Nakagawa declined to directly reaffirm whether the company remains on track to meet its 2030 carbon negative goal, stating "many of the sustainability solutions are not scaling fast enough to keep pace with AI infrastructure growth." Microsoft's reported emissions from purchased electricity jumped 945% between 2024 and 2025, while electricity consumption increased 24%, reflecting a move away from relying on renewable energy certificates toward investments financing new carbon-free electricity. Microsoft reiterated it bought enough renewable electricity to match 100% of its annual electricity consumption, yet it is developing at least two data centers relying on natural gas for power, in Texas and West Virginia.
