Meta has filed a patent for an AI-powered wearable device that tracks a user's emotional state, including sighs and laughter, and medication intake. The patent filing, published on July 2, describes an "apparatus" for "emotional state analysis and real-time fitness coaching." The filing states the AI assistant may listen to users at predefined times to hear communication such as "sighs, laughter, and/or the tone(s) of a voice(s)" to quantify the user's emotional state. The AI software could provide a summary of emotional trends based on inputs like "a happier emotional state associated with a particular time of day or at a time when medication is taken." In one scenario, the device would recognize when a "user laughs with friend at dinner at 5:15 pm." Meta asserts the AI-powered device would be more effective than a human personal trainer. A Meta spokesperson said the patent does not guarantee Meta will pursue the technology. Fairplay executive director Josh Golin called the patent "creepy," stating it appears to be part of Meta's plans to "monitor every aspect of our lives in order to profit off of ads targeted to users’ emotional vulnerabilities."
