Valerie Veatch’s documentary, *Ghost in the Machine*, examines the origins of AI and asks difficult questions about the technology. Veatch was compelled to make the film after being signed up for the Sora artist group in October of 2025, where she noticed the outputs were "horrifically racist and sexist." She approached OpenAI about this but found the company dismissive. Over the following nine months, she researched and contacted over 40 people for the film. Veatch argues that the story of AI is "a story of power and how power functions" and that anthropomorphising these systems leads to "hyper-capitalist, colonial-like problematic ideas." She criticises the focus on existential risk of super-intelligence, calling it "not a real thing," and says this focus overlooks "the actual harms, the real things that are occurring."
