OpenAI has introduced new teen-specific features for ChatGPT users under 18, including break reminders, a specialized study mode that prioritizes explaining concepts step-by-step over direct answers, and enhanced parental controls for monitoring AI interactions. Users identified as under 18 are automatically transitioned into a specialized teen experience with heightened safety protocols. The company also implemented stricter safety measures regarding sensitive topics, including enhanced protections against violent content, material related to self-harm, and dangerous viral trends. Alongside these features, OpenAI released a Child Safety Blueprint outlining legal, technical, and operational recommendations to prevent sexual exploitation and misuse of children through AI. The blueprint was developed using insights from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Attorney General Alliance, and Thorn, and focuses on strengthening laws regarding harmful content created or altered by AI, improving reporting mechanisms, and embedding safety measures into AI systems from the beginning.
