A wipeout in AI data-center-linked stocks dragged Wall Street sharply lower, with the S&P 500 falling 3.2 percent and on track for its worst drop since President Donald Trump announced his “Liberation Day” tariffs in April 2025. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1,146 points, or 2.1 percent, as of 11 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 5 percent lower. South Korea’s Kospi index tumbled 5.3 percent. Nvidia fell 8.3 percent, Advanced Micro Devices tumbled 15.9 percent, CoreWeave fell 14.9 percent and GE Vernova sank 9.1 percent. The article said such stocks have swung for months on worries that construction of further AI data centers may slow because borrowing money has become expensive, and that Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections added another challenge as nationwide victories by Democrats raised the possibility governments could force pauses in construction of more data centers. Thursday’s drop drowned out gains elsewhere, with roughly two out of every five stocks within the S&P 500 rising; AppLovin soared 30.2 percent after topping analysts’ expectations and approving a program to send up to $3.2 billion to investors by buying back its own stock, bringing the program’s total potential value to $3.6 billion, while Tapestry rallied 6.7 percent.
