A new wave of AI-generated influencers is targeting middle-aged and older women on Instagram and TikTok, exploiting health and body anxieties to sell supplements and health guides. These include "Jennifer Carter" (43,000 Instagram followers), "Evelyn" (230,800 TikTok followers), and "Sweetie Helena" (10,300 Instagram followers), who promote routines involving sunlight, water, strength training, and the supplement NMN, with purchase links in their bios. None of these women are real. Dr Kaitlyn Regehr, who studies AI at UCL, describes these AI influencers as the new frontier of disinformation, noting that "the protection of their mothers has gone very underreported." She says they are generated to exploit specific vulnerabilities of middle-aged and older women, tapping into issues like perimenopause, cancer-treatment journeys, and struggles with aging and self-worth. Regehr adds that usual "fact-checking tools" are faltering as the technology improves. The influencers also set absurd beauty standards, showing women "in their 60s" who look 20 years younger, with accounts like "itsstella.beauty" depicting a woman who transforms after divorce.
