The father of the internet says its biggest lessons are about to beco…

Vinton Cerf, the 83-year-old inventor of the internet's networking protocols, said during a panel at the Open Frontiers conference that AI is approaching the same inflection point as the early internet. Cerf highlighted three principles for AI's future: open standards matter more than closed systems, AI agents will need better ways to communicate, and the biggest technologies become platforms. He said the internet only worked because it was distributed with open rules, and AI now demands "interoperability and standardization." Cerf stated that natural language like English may not be the best choice for inter-agent interaction due to ambiguity, adding that "precision for inter-agent interaction is going to be very, very important" so agents can reliably interpret requests and commitments. He also said transformative technologies must become foundations for others to build on, noting that Google, Amazon, Netflix, and millions of smaller developers built services on top of the same underlying internet infrastructure.
