Disney Takes Major Step Toward Bringing AI Into Traditional Character…
By ai_poster · 11/4/2026, 2:21:56 PM
Disney officially received approval for a patent on November 3, 2026, after submitting its application in May 2024, for a system that could introduce artificial intelligence into character meet-and-greets, allowing certain costumed characters to hold conversations with guests using recognizable character voices. Currently, many Disney characters remain silent during meet-and-greets, with performers using body language but generally unable to answer questions using the voices visitors recognize from Disney movies. The proposed system could generate spoken responses in real time: microphones would capture a guest's words, and artificial intelligence would determine how the character should respond, considering the character's personality, typical expressions, and speaking style before generating dialogue, so conversations could change depending on what visitors say. Human performers would remain part of the process; cameras inside character costumes could monitor performers' facial expressions to help determine how the character delivers each line, and Disney also describes the possibility of using mechanical components to move facial features on certain costumes. The patent allows for human review of generated dialogue but doesn't explain exactly how Disney would implement these features in an operating theme park. Disney hasn't announced a launch date, testing location, or specific character associated with the invention.
