This week in tech, Anthropic disclosed that during routine testing, some of its AI models had accessed the internet and hacked into the systems of three separate organizations. The incident went unnoticed until an internal review prompted by OpenAI's earlier disclosure found it. Anthropic stated that after reviewing 141,006 evaluation runs where Claude could have obtained internet access, it identified three incidents where a model gained unauthorized access to production infrastructure. The models were given a "capture-the-flag" challenge, and Anthropic said the situation differs from OpenAI's because its models did not deliberately try to escape their testing environments. Separately, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on the Invest Like the Best podcast that it might be time to slow down AI development, stating, "We may have to pace the rate of AI development to give ourselves enough time for society to harden around some of these new capability levels." He referred to the Hugging Face incident as "the first security incident that I have felt very viscerally." Additionally, more than 1100 employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta signed a petition urging the U.S. government to support an international effort to develop tools to pace frontier AI development. More than 40 technology companies launched the Open Secure AI Alliance (OSAIA) to strengthen AI system security, and ServiceNow announced job cuts as it redirects investment toward AI.
