Hegseth, White House allies intensify attacks on Anthropic

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth intensified attacks on Anthropic on Saturday, writing on X that "Three months ago, @DeptofWar kicked @AnthropicAI out of our building—forever. Every passing day proves why that was the right move." Earlier this year, Hegseth labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk and prohibited use of its Claude AI chatbot within the Pentagon, prompting a lawsuit from Anthropic over the designation after CEO Dario Amodei sought to ensure the government would not use the tool for fully autonomous lethal weapons or mass domestic surveillance. The latest clash involved Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models; after the administration issued an export control directive to "suspend all access" to the models by foreign nationals, Anthropic disabled access for all customers to comply. The company said the government issued the order after discovering a method of "bypassing" Fable 5, or "jailbreaking," but noted the vulnerabilities "appear relatively simple" and are found by other publicly-available models. A source close to Anthropic told The Hill the administration gave the company 90 minutes to pull Fable 5 on Friday without prior national security threat indication. Anthropic stated the directive was unnecessary and would "essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers."
