Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, has signed a 20-year lease for a new data center campus in Hawesville, a small Hancock County community east of Owensboro, Kentucky. The agreement with developer TeraWulf is expected to generate about $19 billion in contracted revenue over the life of the lease. The 250-acre campus is scheduled to begin operating in the second quarter of 2027, with full operations expected the following year. Once fully operational, the campus will have access to 401 megawatts of electricity. The data center is being built on the site of a former aluminum smelter, which TeraWulf purchased earlier this year as part of a multibillion-dollar redevelopment project.
