Amazon Web Services (AWS) established its first Local Zone in Hanoi, Vietnam, deploying cloud compute and storage directly into the capital to address data residency and single-digit millisecond latency hurdles for sectors like finance, fintech, and AI. According to a media release, the Local Zone enables financial institutions to execute real-time digital experiences and telecommunications companies to process subscriber data locally, and is one of the first global Local Zones to feature Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) One Zone-Infrequent Access and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) Local Snapshots. Jeff Johnson, Managing Director of ASEAN at AWS, stated the infrastructure puts "world-class compute and storage where it matters most." Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Pham Duc Long, noted that AWS’s investment affirms Vietnam's rising position as a digital hub. Data from the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Finance showed Vietnam attracted US$24.81 billion in registered FDI during the first five months of 2026—a 34.9% increase year-on-year, with investment concentrating on data centers, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and advanced R&D. Virginia B. Foote, Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi, said AWS’s investment sends a "clear message" that Vietnam is a growing region worth investing in.
