Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind cofounder and CEO, predicted that their research and products "will help unlock AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)" and that we are nearing the singularity, which he described as a "new golden age of scientific discovery and progress." Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, painted a future where intelligence "can be metered and accessed only by the paying few." In response, Pope Leo XIV released an encyclical titled "Magnifica Humanitas" outlining concerns about emerging technologies like AI. The encyclical calls for the "disarmament" of AI, liberating it from monopolistic control, and warns that concentration of digital power may lead to greater inequality, manipulation, and exclusion. The Pope calls on the faithful, developers, and governments to center AI discussions on human dignity, the common good, and social justice. He also warns that tools like social media and AI are used to propagate misinformation and disinformation, undermining democracy, reminding that "the quality of public communication depends directly on social trust and, in turn, shapes it."
