The real-life vocalists behind virtual artists, including EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, who performed the songs of girl group HUNTR/X in KPop Demon Hunters, are joining the Federation of Korean Music Performers one after another. The move aims to enable performers hidden behind virtual characters to receive royalties for the use of their recordings and manage the rights to their voices through a collective rights management organization. According to the Federation, the vocalists behind virtual idol group B:DAWN have joined, and performers behind HUNTR/X, the Saja Boys, Isegye Idol, and PLAVE are also registered members. Real-life vocalists can join because the people who record songs and appear in live performances are human performers. Once registered, vocalists are formally recognized as performers and can receive royalties and respond to infringement through the collective organization. The proliferation of AI-generated covers and synthetic recordings has made rights registration more important, as listeners may find it difficult to distinguish between a song performed by the actual vocalist and one generated using AI. Performers’ rights belong to the person who actually sang the song, and vocalists register both their legal names and stage names with the Federation.
