Jie Tang, co-founder of the Chinese AI company Z.ai, which develops models like 'GLM-5.2,' has argued that AI should be 'opened up as widely as possible,' according to a Bloomberg report. This statement came after Reuters reported that the Chinese government is discussing restricting foreign access to cutting-edge AI models. Tang stated in an internal memo that 'one hand aims higher and challenges the limits of intelligence, while the other hand paves the way to the future, opening up cutting-edge capabilities as widely as possible so that everyone can use them.' Z.ai originally started as a venture from the research lab of Professor Tang at Tsinghua University. The company's 'GLM-5.2' has been reported to outperform Claude Code in vulnerability detection benchmarks. Tang added that for the next two years, the company will not pursue short-term profitability but will focus on technological innovation in areas such as long-term tasks, autonomous agents, and fully self-learning AI models.
