During Apple’s latest earnings call, Tim Cook hinted that advanced Siri intelligence features may eventually be tied to paid iCloud+ upgrades. Apple’s competitors in AI, including Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Amazon, charge monthly fees of nearly $20 for access to their most complex models, and Apple faces similarly high and growing cloud computing and energy costs. Apple clarified that intensive use of AI features, such as image generation and advanced smart home camera tracking via Private Cloud Compute servers, will have daily usage limits. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, confirmed that raising these limits would be available to subscribers of paid iCloud+ plans. During the earnings call, Cook avoided specific figures but said, “We think there will be people who want to use AI heavily, and we will have upgrade capabilities on iCloud+ where users can upgrade their plans to access higher options, and we will see how user demand for that turns out.” This suggests Apple is considering linking daily AI usage limits to higher iCloud plans, such as the 2TB, 6TB, and 12TB tiers. However, Apple has historically avoided rushing to impose fees, having provided Emergency SOS via satellite for free for years despite billions spent on it.
