Take-Two and Zynga veteran Luke Dicken, speaking with 80 Level, said AI can be useful for augmenting games but argued that the hype around ChatGPT and generative AI has been overblown. Dicken defined AI as "anything that allows a machine to make a decision" and noted use cases where "you need something faster than a human could make it, or when you need more of something than a human could make." He cited No Man’s Sky’s massive per-player universe as impractical for human authoring and Valve's Left 4 Dead AI Director, which "could modify which zombies were spawning and where, what supplies were available, and even the weather effects to create that tension." However, he was unconvinced by LLM-backed dynamic NPC demos from companies like Nvidia, saying more choices "doesn't make them interesting." He stressed the key question: "What does this, from a design standpoint, allow us to do that’s beneficial to the player experience and that we couldn’t already do before?"
