Britain's King Charles III warned of the dangers of AI at a meeting attended by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and other artificial intelligence industry figures, according to Reuters and the BBC. Charles III held the meeting on the 17th (local time) at Dumfries House in Scotland. Attendees included CEO Huang; Demis Hassabis, Google chief scientist and co-founder of DeepMind; and OpenAI Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Sarah Friar. In opening remarks, Charles III said, "The development, nature and speed of AI are fascinating, but they are equally deeply concerning." He also said, "Our humanity must remain sacrosanct, and the public wants assurance that we will not lose control over our destiny and our souls." He said we must put in place the means to adequately control AI before it is too late, and that decisions made during this formative period will determine the world future generations inherit. He emphasized, "The task before you is not merely to advance the technology," adding, "It is to ensure that the technology steadfastly serves humanity, communities and the natural world." The meeting was held as voices in the industry continue to call for slowing the pace of AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have raised or backed arguments that the pace should be adjusted. U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the call to slow down. No special agreement appeared likely to be reached at the meeting.
