More businesses are transitioning from API-based software to autonomous AI agents to remain competitive, but this requires significant planning to mitigate problems like hallucinations. Traditional APIs produced predictable results by following established authentication, authorization, and transaction rules, whereas agentic AI introduces interpretation, as systems independently determine actions based on user intent, creating uncertainty. Agentic AI is not a replacement for APIs, platforms, databases, or transaction systems, as agents depend on these technologies. Platform architecture determines available actions, permission enforcement, and system response at scale.
