According to an article published on July 28, 2026, AI voice scams targeting the elderly are rising, with AI voice clones created using just three seconds of audio data. In July 2025, Sharon Brightwell, a resident of Hillsboro County, Florida, USA, fell victim to a scam using AI voice cloning technology, receiving a call that began with an AI voice clone of his daughter claiming to have hit a pregnant woman while driving. The call switched to a man posing as a lawyer, who demanded $15,000 in cash as bail and warned Brightwell not to mention the purpose when withdrawing money. Within an hour, Brightwell withdrew cash and handed it to a delivery person. He later realized the call was a scam. In April 2026, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center released its 2025 Annual Report on Online Crime, which for the first time included “AI-driven fraud” as a separate category. The report recorded more than 22,000 complaints related to AI in 2025, with losses exceeding $893 million due to AI crime. Victims aged 60 and over accounted for $352 million in losses. The FBI noted the figures only include recognized and reported incidents, and engineer Tim Green stated the reported $893 million is a lower limit.
