Irish CRO giant ICON named Microsoft its technology partner this week, implementing Microsoft’s Copilot and data infrastructure enterprise-wide to scale its agentic AI platform, Orbis, aiming to accelerate study design, streamline operations, and enhance decision-making. The partnership will use Microsoft’s Fabric and Azure data services to provide Orbis with real-time data at scale, while ICON plans to leverage Copilot and Copilot Chat to automate high-volume tasks and deploy agents within clinical trial workflows. ICON CEO Barry Balfe stated, “The industry is moving to AI as core infrastructure, and we are determined to be at the forefront of this transition.” The announcement preceded a first-quarter earnings call that gave Evercore ISI analysts a clearer view of the company’s recovery, with continued strong bookings driven by improving underlying demand, providing “additional visibility into improving revenue performance and more importantly into a return to organic revenue growth in 2027.” Prior to Balfe taking over in October 2025, ICON had suffered from slowing Big Pharma demand resulting in layoffs. Earlier this year, the company revoked its 2025 financial guidance and launched an internal investigation after becoming aware of possible accounting errors. In May, ICON concluded its investigation, restating consolidated financial statements for 2023 and 2024, with revenue overstated by 0.8% in full-year 2023 and by 1.1% in full-year 2024.
