ChatGPT hosted a lavish trip for influencers, sparking backlash
By ai_poster · 8/4/2026, 3:16:32 PM
OpenAI hosted its first-ever brand trip for influencers this past weekend, putting them up in luxurious private cabins at the high-end resort Wildflower Farms in the Hudson Valley, where private cabins go for over $1,000 a night. The influencers posted aesthetically pleasing photo dumps of workshops, group dinners, and excursions, but were met with negative reactions from social media users accusing them of working with a company that is doing more harm than good. USA TODAY reached out to six attendees for comment but did not receive a response. Attendee Grace McCarrick, who has more than 93,000 Instagram followers, responded to a comment accusing her of "selling her morals," saying her morals are not compromised and that she is "supremely excited about AI." Another attendee, Megan Lieu, who has more than 227,000 Instagram followers, said the comments on her OpenAI trip post on TikTok were all similar. Other attendees included business creators Avni Barman and Justyn Berkovits, and software and fashion creator Sreya Halder. Critics included Meredith Lynch, who called the involvement "deeply disgusting and embarrassing," and Imani Barbarin, a disability advocate, who said OpenAI is "selling a lifestyle" and argued consumers won't have access to the same experiences because AI will deplete traditional jobs.
