A robotics startup called Satyress, based in Auburn, California, has created Threehalves, a machine roughly two meters tall with a humanoid torso on a four-legged base, a horned skull with illuminated eyes, and power tools instead of hands. The design deliberately connects to the brand, named after the female version of Greek satyrs. Satyress argues that a humanlike torso and arms allow for natural teleoperation and interfacing with human tools, while a quadruped body with friction braked joints provides a stable platform with no latent power consumption when not in motion, and increased stability and failsafes over a biped in the event of loss of motor control. The company notes that a biped that loses power collapses, while a centaur stands with brakes locked. Threehalves lacks dexterous fingers, instead using a quick connect wrist interface that provides tool positioning accuracy and repeatability, with 12v, 18v, and 48v power, as well as air, supplied to attachments from the robot side. Each arm ends in a rugged socket for chainsaws, drills, impact guns, and wrenches. Satyress did not respond to a request for comment by publication.
