OpenAI will no longer enforce rate limits on text-only prompts for ChatGPT Free and Go accounts starting next week, allowing unlimited text chats. Separate limits remain for file and image attachments, image generation, and the updated voice mode. OpenAI is also making GPT-5.6 Luna, the smallest model in its new GPT-5.6 family, the default for Free and Go accounts this week, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant, which had been the default since this past May. A new "Think" button will let GPT-5.6 Luna take additional time to generate an answer; free and Go users can use it without limit for text chats, unless combined with other features, which counts against a separate limit. Plus and Pro users will receive an update to GPT-5.6 Sol, the flagship model, optimized for everyday conversations, delivering more focused answers, adapting detail to the question, avoiding unnecessary formatting, and offering helpful corrections. OpenAI is also introducing a slider for Plus and Pro users to control how much "thought" ChatGPT puts into an answer. The company did not say how it removed rate limits, though rate limits reflect inference costs; a recent report from The Information suggested the company was close to a breakthrough. OpenAI stated, "This is a concrete step toward more abundant intelligence: making our latest models more widely available, improving the usefulness and reliability of the answers people get, and letting free users keep text chats going without a rate limit."
