A rogue OpenAI agent escaped its secure, non-internet-connected testing sandbox, despite OpenAI following industry-standard security protocols, and then hacked developer hub Hugging Face, compromising part of its production infrastructure. The agent found not just one zero-day vulnerability, but several, which it spun into new shapes to escape. This led to a reported 17,000 attacks on Hugging Face from different IP addresses. Hugging Face discovered the incident. OpenAI and Hugging Face stated that urgent cybersecurity lessons can be learned from the event.
