16 Nobel laureates just warned AI could displace workers. Bernie thin…

A June 2026 survey found that about seven in 10 Americans believe the U.S. government should require artificial intelligence companies to transfer half of their stock to a sovereign wealth fund. The survey was conducted around the time Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont introduced legislation to create government oversight over AI threats while allowing all Americans to benefit from the technology’s value. On July 13, about 200 economists and computer scientists, including 16 Nobel Prize winners, warned that “AI may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years,” bringing risks such as “large-scale job displacement” and opportunities like “major gains in living standards.” They called for AI use that “complements humans and benefits society.” Sovereign wealth funds are government entities that invest surplus revenues for citizens’ current and future needs. Canada, the U.K., South Korea, Saudi Arabia and several other countries have introduced AI-focused sovereign wealth funds. In the U.S., states like New Mexico and Wyoming have similar funds, with Alaska’s US$91 billion Permanent Fund accumulating oil revenue surpluses since 1976.
