Sarvam AI, a Bengaluru-based startup valued at $1.5 billion, is exploring further capital avenues, including potential government investment, to strengthen India's sovereign AI infrastructure. The company plans to scale its GPU capacity from roughly 2,000 Blackwell GPUs to 10,000 units to support indigenous foundation models and enterprise adoption. Sarvam AI recently secured a $300 million funding round, which included a $74 million investment from Nvidia. To support its infrastructure, the company has partnered with HCLTech to develop a sovereign data center in Odisha, aiming to reduce reliance on global AI infrastructure and address concerns over potential international export controls. The startup reports that nearly a million users currently interact with its platform components, providing data to refine its models. Its commercial roadmap includes providing customized AI applications and foundation models to enterprise clients, with a specific interest in the public sector and industries requiring secure, self-contained AI systems. Sarvam AI’s move aligns with the broader IndiaAI Mission, a government-led initiative to foster a local AI ecosystem. While no formal government investment deal has been confirmed, the company has already benefited from state-supported research initiatives for its early-stage model development.
