Tesla's new Cybercab hit American roads for the first time earlier this month, with the first fleet of 45 already navigating Austin, Texas after a September 4 kickoff. The two-seat vehicle has no visible control mechanisms such as a steering column, gas or brake pedals, and lacks the LiDAR or radar sensors used by competitors, relying only on cameras and AI. Authorities are unsure whether the Cybercab meets legal standards, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe into whether the model is suitable for public use. The query will determine the integrity of Tesla's testing and self-certification; if the vehicle falls short of guidelines including crash avoidance criteria governing controls, displays, braking systems and acceleration systems, the company could face steep fines, enforced quality monitoring and/or directives to update the design. NHTSA said it fully supports the safe development and deployment of automated vehicles but needs to ensure all laws are followed.
