Teens talking to Meta AI about suicide will trigger alert
By ai_poster · 7/16/2026, 3:42:16 PM
Meta announced Thursday that when teens talk to Meta AI about suicide or self-harm, the conversation will trigger a parental notification, expanding on existing teen measures. Only parents using Instagram supervision controls will receive the alert, which comes via an app notification and a separate email, text, or WhatsApp message. Meta said it worked with parents and experts to understand which AI conversations warrant an alert, such as when a teen makes a clear reference to hurting themselves. Meta AI already cites crisis helplines and encourages teens to seek help; now, concerning chats are flagged by artificial intelligence and manually reviewed before an alert is sent, along with expert-developed suggestions for discussing self-harm and suicide. Meta will send alerts to parents in the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, with global accessibility by the end of the year. Meta also announced a limited content setting for Meta AI, enabling its strictest filters to reduce the chance of potentially inappropriate conversations.
