Eric Brignolffson, director of the Digital Economy Research Institute at Stanford University, said artificial intelligence "is past the deepest bottom of the 'productivity J curve'" and "at the beginning of a steep upward phase," in an interview with the Mail Business. He will give a keynote lecture at the World Knowledge Forum, held from the 8th to the 10th of next month at the Jangchung Arena and Shilla Hotel in Seoul. Brignolffson said the period of productivity explosion is "close to an inflection point," noting that large investments in intangible assets delay statistical reflection, causing measured productivity to underestimate technological progress. He cited four signals indicating the passage of the low point: productivity growth in AI-intensive industries, companies confirming actual production and sales growth, launching completely new products and services, and massive labor relocation. He added that the first and fourth signals in the U.S. are starting to be identified as data. He also said the productivity stagnation period is shortening, with the adjustment period that took about 15 years for ERP systems potentially shortened to 3 to 5 years in the AI era, but only for companies that redesigned work responsibilities and decision-making methods. Last month, Brignolffson led over 200 economists, including 16 Nobel laureates, in issuing statements on the AI employment crisis, urging that AI complement rather than replace humans.
