Databricks' serverless platform launches tens of millions of VMs daily across AWS, Azure, and GCP, with each VM requiring network configuration—such as allowed destinations, private endpoints, and Unity Catalog changes—before serving workloads. The old architecture synchronously fetched this configuration from multiple upstream services on the critical path of cluster creation, causing RPC latency of 5,000ms at p99 and reduced availability due to compound failures. Databricks re-architected delivery using event-driven pipelines and snapshot pre-computation, reducing RPC latency by 97.5% (5,000ms → 125ms) and achieving 99.99% service availability. The new approach avoids synchronous calls, instead pre-computing per-workspace network configurations to eliminate duplicated computation and scalability bottlenecks tied to tenant growth.
