Maggie Fanari, CEO of J. Rothschild Capital Management, which manages RIT Capital Partners Plc, discussed the firm’s strategy in an interview. The firm, founded by Jacob Rothschild (1936-2024) in 1971, was renamed RIT and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1988. The Rothschild family remains the largest holder of the investment trust, which has £4.6 billion ($6.1 billion) in assets. Fanari, a 47-year-old British-Canadian, joined RIT’s board in 2019 and was named CEO of JRCM in January 2024. She described RIT as a family office seeking equity-like returns with lower risk, noting that since inception in 1988, it has generated a return of 10.6% a year on average, capturing 71% of monthly market rises and only 40% of market declines. Fanari highlighted the advantages of RIT’s closed-end fund structure, which provides permanent capital, allowing investment in multi-asset classes including private markets without needing to sell due to fund redemptions or market volatility. She noted that the firm’s culture was great, and her challenges were mostly organizational, including enhancing transparency with shareholders and building out investor relations and communications functions.
