The University of Tennessee Research Foundation is suing AI company Anthropic for alleged patent infringement, claiming Anthropic infringed on two UT patents related to neural networks without permission. The lawsuit, filed July 20 in Delaware where Anthropic is based, seeks monetary damages and an order to stop Anthropic from using the patented technology. This is reportedly the first patent infringement lawsuit filed against the company behind the AI program Claude. The complaint seeks to protect the professors behind the technology and their contributions to innovations developed "years before artificial intelligence systems became widely deployed in commercial products and services." Anthropic recently agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement in a class-action copyright lawsuit brought by authors, approved by a California judge July 20. "We disagree with the allegations and intend to defend this case vigorously," an Anthropic spokesperson said. The UT Research Foundation since 1935 has worked to protect intellectual property rights across all five UT campuses.
