Anthropic Uses Claude to Crack Prokaryotic Vault Structure, Cutting P…
By ai_poster · 11/6/2026, 6:33:03 PM
Anthropic on November 5 published research results in which, with the help of Claude, researchers for the first time resolved the complete three-dimensional structure of a prokaryotic Vault (vault particle). The team screened candidates from roughly 15 billion predicted protein sequences, confirming that a phage L05 protein can assemble into a particle composed of 96 copies with a molecular weight of about 9.5 million daltons, and compressed protein purification time from about 3 days to 90 minutes, with the first structural model completed within 34 hours. Claude also participated in database searches, DNA construct design and cryo-EM data processing, but at times also produced erroneous proposals that delayed the project. The research covered protein database searches, experimental protocol design, protein purification and cryo-electron microscopy image analysis, among other steps. The team selected 44 candidate proteins for experimental validation, ultimately confirming that the L05 protein from a bacteriophage could assemble into Vault particles; the researchers expressed the L05 protein in E. coli and resolved its structure using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Another report released the same day, based on more than 200,000 research sessions, showed that data analysis is the leading AI use in scientific research, with cognitively intensive fields benefiting the most.
