Labour MP for Lowestoft Jess Asato has said she was “shocked” after becoming the victim of non-consensual deepfake image abuse that surfaced on Elon Musk’s X, with images she says were made using Grok. Asato, who has campaigned against violence against women and girls and against nudification apps and harmful pornography, said she saw deepfaked pictures of herself in a bikini, images featuring her face on a man’s body, a video in which she claims she was created by Grok being chloroformed by a group of men, and an image of her looking “really pregnant with quintuplets, in a kitchen.” She said she had publicly called out Musk before the images surfaced, and that after she reported every image of herself, her friends encouraged her to seek legal advice; once her lawyer sent a letter, “the vast majority got taken down.” Asato has decided to take xAI, the AI company behind Grok, majority owned by Musk, to court. Her claim argues that her likeness is her data and alleges that xAI breached data protection law, misusing her private information by allowing Grok to process her image without her consent and invaded her privacy in the process.
