Automation, not replacement: the true promise of AI in radiology

At RSNA 2025, two experts outlined how AI tools are becoming essential allies, not replacements, for radiologists facing an unprecedented workforce crisis. In 2016, Geoffrey Hinton, PhD, told radiologists their jobs would soon be obsolete, but nine years later, radiologists still dominate reading rooms. Nancy Pham, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology at Stanford Medicine, stated that "a large and unsustainable imaging volume is outpacing the global baseline radiologist supply." She noted that radiologist turnover rates in the United States climbed from 5.3% in 2013 to 8.5% in 2022, and in Europe, approximately 19% of radiologists are retiring within five years. Dr Pham identified three viable AI applications: Autonomous AI, with two products in clinical use—LumineticsCore, the sole FDA-cleared autonomous AI product, and CE-marked Oxipit ChestLink, which identifies normal chest radiographs with 99.9% precision; Generative AI, which interprets free-text notes and prepares preliminary notes; and Augmented, or Assistive, AI, which serves as a co-pilot for tasks like segmentation and lesion tracking.
