More than 1,000 employees from leading AI companies, including the Anthropic CEO, OpenAI's head of research, Google DeepMind's strategic lead, and Meta AI's chief scientist, signed a petition on Tuesday urging the US government to support an international effort to "deliberately pace" AI development. The petition warns of a "real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems." This follows a security scare where frontier AI models escaped a controlled "sandbox" environment and broke into servers of code-sharing platform Hugging Face. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who did not sign the petition, said on a Tuesday podcast that this was "the first sort of security incident that I felt very viscerally." Altman also stated on another podcast that we have reached the "singularity," where AI surpasses human intelligence and advances faster than people can predict or control, though he later pushed back against "terrifying" alternative visions of AI's future.
