SpaceXAI disabled a feature in its Grok Build AI coding assistant after researchers discovered the tool was uploading users’ entire code repositories to Google Cloud without clearly informing them. Grok Build allegedly uploaded complete codebases, including ignored files and deleted secrets, to Google Cloud before the feature was disabled. Researchers claimed the uploads included files the AI assistant had been instructed not to access, as well as sensitive information removed from version history, and noted the amount of data retained appeared larger than typical for competing AI tools. After disclosure, SpaceXAI updated its servers to send a new configuration flag disabling automatic codebase uploads, and subsequent testing confirmed the upload process had stopped. Elon Musk responded on X, claiming all previously uploaded data would be completely and utterly deleted, while encouraging developers to allow data retention where possible. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reacted with a one-word post on X, calling the situation "Concerning." Independent security researcher Dr. Lukasz Olejnik said the data collected could potentially include proprietary source code, infrastructure details, credentials, personal information and security-related documentation.
