FTC Targets Anthropic for AI Bias, Shields Grok Despite Musk's Admitt…

Federal regulators moved this week from proposal to enforcement posture on AI content oversight, dispatching compliance letters to private-sector AI companies, but the document underpinning those letters names Anthropic repeatedly as an example of ideological bias while never mentioning Elon Musk or the xAI-owned Grok model, despite Musk's publicly admitted interventions in Grok's outputs. The Federal Trade Commission sent the letters following a proposed policy statement — "Suppression of Accuracy in Artificial Intelligence Systems" — released on July 1, 2026, pursuant to Executive Order 14365 signed by President Trump in December 2025. The comment period closed July 31 after drawing more than 300 responses from trade associations, legal scholars, members of Congress, and civil liberties organizations — the large majority of them critical. Anthropic appeared in the policy statement's footnotes more than half a dozen times, framed as examples of ideological bias. Grok appeared once, in a footnote citing an advertisement describing the model as "your truth-seeking AI companion for unfiltered answers." Musk publicly admitted to intervening in Grok's outputs on multiple occasions. In May 2025, Grok began inserting references to "white genocide" in South Africa into unrelated user queries; xAI called the episode the result of an "unauthorized modification."
