Voter anger over massive AI server farms crossed party lines and rewrote local campaigns from Wisconsin to Texas after Tuesday’s midterm elections, TIME reported. Project disruption tracking cited in a recent Amazon warning showed that neighborhood groups blocked or delayed 45 planned U.S. data center builds worth $68 billion during a single quarter this year, and 843 local opposition groups are fighting server construction across 49 states, with Hawaii the only state without one. OpenAI confirmed to Business Insider that it wants to stop using the phrase “data centers” and call its giant server warehouses “AI compute campuses” instead. A recent Pew Research survey found that 54 percent of Americans think AI data centers hurt the environment. OpenAI chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane called the 2026 midterms a “movie trailer” for the 2028 presidential race and told reporters that local towns deserve real accountability and financial upside.
