OpenAI's Brockman Says AI Could Turn Death Into a Choice, Backing Mus…

OpenAI President Greg Brockman said at WSJ Tech that death may eventually become a choice rather than something that happens to people, arguing artificial intelligence is about to deliver measurable gains in biology and medicine. Brockman said the next 12 to 18 months should bring "real delivery and real significant strides and impacts on biology, health, and curing of diseases." His remarks place him alongside Elon Musk, who argued in a January interview with Peter Diamandis that extending human lifespan is a tractable engineering problem, saying "I've long thought that longevity or semi-immortality is an extremely solvable problem. I don't think it's a particularly hard problem," and that "you're programmed to die. And so if you change the program, you will live longer." Musk returned to the theme on October 30, stating that "longevity is coming," though his January discussion centered on Neuralink rather than AI-driven biomedical research. Brockman's prediction lands as AI systems move from reading genetic data to generating it, with biological language models such as Evo and Evo 2 able to draft new genetic code, multi-agent research frameworks producing therapeutic hypotheses and drug candidates later validated in physical laboratories, and laboratory robotics shifting to sensor-driven systems that adjust experimental parameters in real time. Neither Brockman nor OpenAI offered a technical roadmap or timeline for the mortality claim, and the gap between a 12-to-18-month window for disease research and the far broader proposition of death as a choice remains wide
