AI Search Is Deciding Which AI Startups Get Found | An Interview With…

AI startups face a paradox: they build the AI systems that now control their own discovery, as B2B buyers use ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini to choose vendors, reshaping pipelines across AI, B2B SaaS, and fintech. Austin Heaton, an Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) consultant with over 12 years in search, works with B2B companies to become the brand AI names. AEO earns a brand a mention inside an AI answer, unlike traditional SEO which earns a clickable ranking. This matters more for AI startups because their buyers are earliest adopters of AI research, and the category is crowded with thousands of startups launched in the last two years, with engines compressing the field into answers naming four or five vendors. In one engagement, a client went from essentially invisible to 5,130 ChatGPT referrals and 101 conversions in 60 days. Companies often err by treating AI visibility like classic SEO, publishing blog posts on their own domain, but AI engines assemble answers largely from third-party sources like independent publications, comparison content, analyst commentary, and review platforms. If positive information exists only on a company's own website, the machines have little reason to trust it.
