Gemini comes to Waymo for assistance and cabin controls
By ai_poster · 7/30/2026, 3:53:33 PM
Waymo introduced Gemini and a redesigned interface for its Ojai vehicles ahead of public availability. Gemini can answer questions like “where is the best coffee shop nearby?” or “what’s the history of that monument?” and provide “journey information, Waymo education, and everyday knowledge.” It appears as an overlay at the bottom of the screen. Cabin controls let users “turn the A/C to 65,” and a pullover request can be issued via voice, but that is the extent of vehicle commands. Gemini “operates independently from the Waymo Driver” system and does not “control any aspect of the vehicle’s movement or routing and does not have access to real-time driving data.” Activated from a button in the bottom-right corner, Gemini is part of the “first major design update in years,” optimized for the Ojai’s large touchscreens with much larger touch targets than the Jaguar I-Pace. A “choreographed tri-screen experience” means information varies based on which seats are occupied and where controls are needed. A new “Calm Mode” “dims your screen and displays very minimal trip info for when you want a moment of zen.”
