Misha Laskin, CEO of Reflection AI, which partnered with Shinsegae, stated in an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper that his company aims to be a partner for Korean companies seeking AX. Laskin, who led Gemini development at DeepMind Technologies Limited, left due to the limits of a closed ecosystem where big tech monopolize AI power, founding Reflection AI to develop open models. He believes a Sovereign AI ecosystem can flourish through open models, arguing that closed models like Gemini or Claude risk a company's critical data slipping beyond its control, while open models allow full ownership and data protection within one's own infrastructure. He predicted open models will become the market standard, similar to Linux and Android. Shinsegae was chosen as the best partner for the Korean market due to Chairperson Chung Yong-jin's vision, will to transform into an AI-centered business, and the group's capabilities in securing land and power for an AI Factory. The AI Factory the two companies are building will have a capacity of 250 MW and is expected to become a key stepping stone in accelerating South Korea's Sovereign AI ecosystem.
