Meta admits it 'missed the mark' on AI feature
By ai_poster · 7/11/2026, 6:22:07 PM
Meta discontinued an artificial intelligence feature that allowed users to generate images by tagging public Instagram accounts, just days after its launch, following criticism from privacy advocates, Hollywood's actors' union and lawmakers' allies in the entertainment industry. The feature, part of the rollout of Muse Image introduced on Tuesday within Meta AI, let people @-mention any public Instagram account and use content from that profile without the account owner's permission, with users opted in by default. Meta said in an update: "We've heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it's no longer available." Haley McNamara of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation called it "an obvious tool for #sextortion and other scammers." SAG-AFTRA told members to opt out, and following the reversal, a spokesperson called the discontinuation "the responsible thing to do." Muse Image itself remains live, letting users turn prompts into visuals and apply effects, but the tagging feature is gone.
