OpenAI announced on August 6, 2026 that text chats will no longer be capped anywhere on ChatGPT, a service that has just passed one billion people using it each week. The rollout is staggered: Plus and Pro subscribers get their upgrade today, while Free and Go accounts start getting changes this week and unlimited text chats plus the Think button arrive next week. OpenAI is splitting its lineup into two paths. The new GPT-5.6 Luna model will be the default for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5. For harder questions, there is a Think button. The enhanced GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro subscribers is built for quick jobs, including questions, planning, writing, web research, advice, and decisions. There is also a thinking slider for Plus and Pro users. The upgraded Sol is not the same as the GPT-5.6 Sol used in Codex and Work; that version stays unchanged. Caps are not disappearing everywhere: image generation, images, voice, and file uploads keep their own separate limits, and only text chats are becoming unlimited. In OpenAI's internal testing, GPT-5.6 Luna made 62% fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5-Instant, and for GPT-5.6 Sol, factual errors were 68% less common in an internal evaluation. These are OpenAI's own numbers, not independent checks. Even with the improvement, these are still machines that can sound confident and be wrong.
