In the 1990s, India leapfrogged from limited fixed-line access to mobile-first connectivity, creating conditions for low-cost data, UPI payments, and digital public infrastructure. Healthcare may now be at a similar inflection point. India's healthcare system has long been criticized for fragmentation, high out-of-pocket spending, uneven quality, and the absence of a unified payer structure. However, in the age of artificial intelligence, these weaknesses could create a strategic opening. The developed world's healthcare system runs on a "CPT Code Landline" of billing codes and insurance gatekeepers built over six decades, where more than a third of every healthcare dollar is consumed by administrative overhead alone. That architecture is built for sick-care, not healthspan, struggling with early risk detection, preventive screening, and longitudinal monitoring. India's less-constrained market can move first in these areas. India has UPI, which processed more than 21 billion transactions in January 2026 alone, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which created a national health identity with nearly 80 crore ABHA accounts active by mid-2025.
