Privacy Controversy: Google Uses Uploaded Files to Train AI Models

Google has faced criticism after updating its policies to allow the use of media and files uploaded by users through its search services and related applications for training artificial intelligence models. This includes images uploaded via Google Lens, audio files from voice searches, and text processed through Google Translate. Google states this aims to improve the accuracy of its generative models and develop image recognition technologies. To address concerns, Google provided users with an option to disable this data collection through the “Search History” page by disabling the “Save Media” option. This policy currently applies to various search services, while existing personal data in Google Photos remains outside this update. The debate highlights a broader tension as tech companies race for datasets in generative AI, with experts arguing that leveraging user-generated content without explicit consent raises ethical questions.
